Free Write Arts & Literacy engages criminalized youth and young adults in the performing, visual, and literary arts so that they become the narrators of their own stories and the authors of their futures. By co-designing creative space with our students, Free Write supports them as they develop educational and career opportunities that mitigate their relationship with the justice system, while also contributing to the public discourse around issues of youth incarceration.

The works featured here are drawn from programming (and several exhibitions over the years) at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, Cook County Division 10 and teaching artists of Free Write Arts & Literacy, plus students from Marshall Middle School via its partnership with The Franke Center for the Arts in Marshall.
